CHAPTER TEN

“We’re not going to mind control her.” I said to the group through tightly clenched teeth maybe forty five minutes later. I tried not to sound irritated, but my stomach was rolling and my head was hurting enough for me to want nothing more than to crawl into a dark room.

With the exception of Jamie, pretty much everyone else in the crew looked as bad as, or worse than me. Captain Smith’s choke hold had left Tati’s throat so thoroughly bruised that she had no choice but to communicate via a notes app on her phone. I’d seen MMA fighters with faces less pulped than Miguel’s, who was sporting a new sling for the shoulder Smith popped right at the end. I, on the other hand, had managed to make it out of the fight with only a lump on my forehead and an “only” slightly fractured jaw.

For a moment, Tati started to type something out on her phone. Then she growled in frustration, dropped the device to the table, and wiggled her fingers through the air in quick, graceful motions.

I knew what was going on here. Captain Smith’s decision to open her attack with a choke hold on Tati had been a stroke of genius. By damaging Tati’s throat too badly to speak, Smith had taken what was frankly our most powerful and adaptable weapon off the field of play. Tati’s power was firmly embedded in the language of Faerie, and without the ability to talk, she had to fall back on a kind of fae sign language which could only convey short pieces of information at a time.

Fortunately, even small bits of fae sign language were more natural to Tati than typing fast on a touch screen. Within a handful of seconds, she’d traced a string of glowing fae words in the air.

“Uh, what?” said Miguel.

Tati growled again, shook her head once, then added a quick, odd motion with one hand. Within a second, the glowing letters that her fingers had traced shifted from the spellscript of Faerie to legible, albeit still glowing, English.

“Why the fuck shouldn’t we mind control her?” asked Tati’s message.

A glance around the suite’s living room showed me that Tati wasn’t alone in her opinion. Miguel was nodding slowly as he read her message, and Jamie, with their mind control magic at the forefront of this conversation, had been the one to suggest this option in the first place.

None of them were wrong in asking the question. We couldn’t leave Captain Smith behind when we went to carry out our heist. She was too resourceful a fighter to be left unattended with something so infallible as ropes, handcuffs, or magically summoned vines as the only things to stop her.

We also couldn’t execute her in cold blood. Killing in the heat of battle was something that all of us had accepted as a possibility. But the Captain was restrained, now, and no longer a direct threat. Even if I hadn’t opposed such an option
